Cyn-CollyardEducation: MS Civil Engineering/Construction Management, BS in Civil Engineering, BA Political Science, PE and PMP, MWH Inspirational Leadership course

Job Overview: PM and/or PTL on large projects (Cleveland, Chicago, New Orleans, Northeast Ohio); PM role for leadership and professional development; Quality Manager on past projects; Construction Manager on past projects.

How I ended up at MWH: Recruited out of Case Western Reserve University for the CM Group in Cleveland; relocated for MWH to Chicago and New Orleans and back to Cleveland for leadership roles on some great projects.

What is on my desk right now: A tunnel extension contract negotiations and start-up – exciting new project ($530 million construction cost) in the east coast that will start in March/April 2014. On my physical desk - too much paper and a solar miniature wind turbine that is powered by my desk lamp.

Free time activities: Cleveland Sight Center (Facility/Steering Committee and past Board Member); Cuyahoga Valley National Park – interpretative volunteer; hiking, kayaking and wonderful outdoor adventures – which does sometimes include wineries; family and friends always!

Best career advice I’ve ever received: Focus on your skills and forge ahead. Refuse to let other people’s issues with you being a woman in the role dictate how you do your work or how you see yourself. Find and listen to your trusted advocate/mentors – always have both a peer and a more senior person. Keep your perspective and hopefully your sense of humor. Thank you, Norm!

Experiences at MWH: I have participated in many excellent internal training opportunities such as PM training, negotiations, training for BUL and many sessions as a facilitator for PM classes at both levels. I especially value my Inspirational Leadership year. I participated in and led some of the Women’s Leadership efforts, including mentoring circles and local groups, and support and appreciate those women and those missions.

Story to tell: MWH continuously strives to improve itself and its employees. Look for the opportunities that coincide with your personal goals and act. Challenge yourself professionally and personally!
