What is your favorite item on your desk right now? Why?

My favorite item on my desk is a photo of one of my schoolmates. He was an airforce pilot and recently passed away in a tragic plane crash on 24 Feb 2015…. On the photo, a dialog between us is attached: “When I let the plane fly for the first time, I screamed out Selen!” That means, he made his dreams come true…

What has been your biggest career lesson?

In order to solve the problems or receive a recompense for the work, the employee should be able to speak with the manager about his/her requests, recommendations and problems fairly.

What is your most memorable project that you’ve worked on at MWH?

I wanted to use my wide experience in EHS auditing for compliance, auditing services in MWH in Turkey. One day, one of the biggest companies in the world requested environmental and occupational health safety compliance auditing service from us. We went to the company, and we found two high findings on the first day of the auditing. The client was shocked because they were doing very important works which does not allow any small fault. And they were managing the EHS issues really properly. However, they forgot to establish two most important prevention actions since the facility started the operation (for four years). And the client just said on the first day of audit: “You have already deserved a medal.” I was so honored because it was the first audit service that we gave as MWH in Turkey.

Any pinch-me career moments?

I was recently in Panama and had the opportunity to be on site at the construction of our Third Set of Locks projects. I’ve been on a lot of construction sites, but this one is certainly the most incredible.

What inspires you in your efforts toward Building a Better World?

I would say outcomes and my worldview. When you apply yourself toward the betterment of another individual or a situation, there is nothing better than seeing the results. I am fortunate to have been born and raised in a developed nation full of opportunity, in a country with freedoms, and in a place where I don’t worry for my safety every waking moment. I believe that with what I have and the blessings I’ve been granted, I owe it to those in less fortunate circumstances to offer what I am able.

Emma Lougheed, Edinburgh, UK

Job Title: Business Consultant

Education: BSc (Hons) Geography, Durham University & MSc Engineering Hydrology, University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne

How did your career at MWH get started?

I was doing the fairly typical “student about to graduate” thing of applying for as many jobs as possible in my field of interest in an attempt to secure my first “proper” job. MWH happened to be the first to offer me one with the bonus it was in an area of work I was interested in and location that suited me. 15 and a half years later I’m still here, albeit working in a different area of the business and different location

What has been your biggest career lesson?

Maybe not a lesson as such but I am fond of the saying “there’s no such thing as a stupid question” and you should never be afraid to ask if you aren’t certain of something.

What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?

Working closely with clients and getting involved in the workings of their business rather than just delivering projects from a distance. I’ve spent a number of years on secondment to Client’s organizations and also working closely with them in my role as a Business Consultant which I find really helps to see the world through their eyes in terms of priorities and objectives when positioning for, and delivering projects.

Kensley Wigginton, Broomfield, CO, USA

Wigginton_Kensley_2Job Title: Communications Manager

Education: University of Colorado at Boulder

How did your career at MWH get started?

During the last semester of my college career, I started asking the usual question, “What do I want to do after school?” I was getting a degree in communications and knew I wanted to focus on corporate communications. I was able to get an internship with MWH in our Creative Services group. After working here for about six months and graduating from college, I was offered a full time job and have been here ever since.

Any pinch-me career moments?

I’ve had two “pinch-me” career moments. About two and half years into my career, I was looking to do something a little different, but knew I did not want to leave the company. Luckily, I was able to take a position as a communications and community outreach specialist working directly for one of our clients on a large recovery program. Not only was the work new and exciting, but the program allowed me to work with some exceptionally talented people and experience challenges we do not often seen in the corporate communications realm.

The second moment came more recently when we launched and branded a new wholly-owned subsidiary of MWH Global – Hawksley Consulting. I’ve had the opportunity to create a new brand, website and messaging for this company, in addition to using my experience in media relations and corporate communications.

What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?

I love seeing the strategy behind communications become a reality. Knowing where we want to be in the next year, two years or even five years and then being able to build messaging and branding with those goals in mind is exciting and very rewarding, especially when you see those elements come together in collateral, websites, social media and other communications.

Unquestionably the thing that attracted me to MWH and is a primary reason that I have stayed for 14 years is our tagline “Building a Better World”. Rosario Urrutia, Santiago, Chile

Rosario UrrutiaJob Title: Environmental Manager

Education: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile

How did your career at MWH get started?

English: In 2004 I joined the firm as a member of a small group that was just starting to offer environmental services in Chile. At that moment MWH was not known in the market, so my first efforts were around marketing; resume preparation and presentations of our overall experience; and outreach to potential clients. When we won our first contract for $50,000 after several months of work, we organized a celebration!

What has been your biggest career lesson?

A team is not just a group of people that work together, it is a group of people who, besides their technical expertise, can generate synergies and help bring out the best in each other in order to achieve a common goal. So build good teams and keep them motivated is a constant focus in the work I do in MWH.

What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?

Emi Fujii, Pasadena, California, USA

Emi Fujii MWHJob Title: Sr. Environmental Engineer

Education: University of Southern California (BS & MS)

What attracted you to MWH Global?

I first heard of MWH in college. They had a good reputation, published the well-known and frequently referenced water treatment textbook (which was a required text in my classes), and was fortunate enough to study under one of the MWH legends who moonlights as an adjunct professor at USC, none other than Mr. Roger Stephenson himself. After my exposure to MWH and learning more about the company, I just knew that I wanted to work there…and I was lucky enough to make the cut.

What has been your biggest career lesson?

“Yes, I can do that” is not always the best response.

What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?

The aspect of work that I enjoy and appreciate the most is the people that I work with. I have been fortunate to be able to work with great people from all career levels throughout my career at MWH. They are not just my colleagues but my friends.

What is your favorite item on your desk right now? Why?

A picture of my two kids to remind me how lucky I am.

Any pinch-me career moments?

I was presented with the “most outstanding presentation” certificate at Breckenridge in 2004 when I was a fairly new graduate and apparently the youngest person speaking at the time! I was really surprised and it spurred me on to have the confidence to present papers and training courses.

What inspires you in your efforts toward Building a Better World?

The projects we do can make a difference. I am involved in carbon footprinting, climate change and energy projects where you can see the effects of what we do on the environment and how we are in a position to help our clients and ourselves adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change.
