The Port of Rotterdam site has been contaminated with CVOC and BTEX and because of the depth of the contamination and the surrounded infrastructure excavation of the contamination was not an option as highlighted in an article published in Ambiente & Sicurezza. To reduce the spread of the contaminants to deeper soil layers and to the surface water, the remediation of the subsoil was essential. Several remediation strategies have been considered but due to practical aspects an in-situ remediation (based on soil vapor extraction enhanced with soil heating) has been selected.
