MWH was responsible for planning, preliminary design, final design and services during construction, PLC programming, startup and commissioning and warranty support for the $160 million, 50 mgd raw water conveyance system as part of the Aurora Prairie Waters project.

The conveyance system includes 34 miles of raw water conveyance piping with a diameter of 60 inches, and 15 trenchless crossings (pipeline tunnels) with casing diameters up to 84 inches. The pipeline is mortar-lined and polyurethane-coated steel pipe with an impressed cathodic protection system.

    Trenchless construction techniques were used to cross major highways, railroads, utility lines, drainages, canals, creeks, irrigation ditches, wetlands and the South Platte River. MWH experts navigated significant subsurface variations including claystone, siltstone, sandstone, clay and alluvial sands and gravels. Due to high groundwater conditions, significant dewatering was required at trenchless crossings and along much of the overall pipeline.

    The conveyance system includes three 6,000 horsepower pumping stations and has a capacity of more than 21,000 cubic feet.

    MWH engineers performed hydraulic and surge analyses and design for system protection from both controlled and uncontrolled shutdowns.

    As part of this project, MWH implemented ActiveManualsTM as an electronic operation and maintenance manual for the four divisions of the City’s water operations group. The manual provides Aurora Water with a system-wide, database-driven electronic solution that is user-friendly and easily updated.

    The project’s primary facilities are complete and were placed into operation in October 2010.

    • MWH led successful value engineering efforts throughout planning and extending through construction, resulting in cost savings of approximately $25 million.
    • Construction change orders were very low. As a result of delivering quality design and implementation of effective construction value engineering, MWH is delivered the project with effectively 0 percent change cost, as a percentage of construction cost.
    • The project will provide Aurora Water customers an additional 3.3 billion gallons of water per year, enough for 20,000 families.
