The Goleta Water District (GWD) selected MWH to design and build upgrades and modifications to the 36-mgd Corona del Mar Water Treatment Plant. The project involved upgrades and modifications to an existing 35-year-old conventional surface water treatment plant. To achieve GWD objectives, MWH implemented innovative solutions including the use of hydraulic flocculation, rapid mixing, SuperScraper® sludge removal, filter-to-waste and chemical storage and feed processes.
Corona del Mar Water Treatment Plant
Location: GWD - Goleta, California, United States
Region: Americas
Market Sector: Water & Wastewater
Client Type: Local & Regional Government
Status: Complete
In addition to the treatment innovations above, MWH designed and constructed a package wastewater treatment plant, water reclamation and reuse system, stormwater collection and treatment system, several site security improvements, sitework enhancements, and a laboratory, administration, and control building. Improvements and upgrades to the filter gallery, pre-treatment system, backwash basin and sludge drying beds were also included. Since modifications were done to an existing plant, which was the District’s only WTP, the plant had to be kept running the entire duration of the project. MWH was able to isolate various areas while working on them. Additionally, the team could only modify the pretreatment system during the winter when the water demand was low and the District could shut down 50 percent of the plant.
The Corona del Mar Water Treatment Plant Design-Build project has received LEED® Gold Certification from the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) for its 9,100-sf energy efficient laboratory, administration and control building. Upon completion of this project, Goleta Water District (GWD) has become one of the first water districts in California to achieve LEED certification for one of its buildings. MWH designed several innovative and cost-saving ideas incorporated into the project, saving GWD over $40K per year in energy costs and 8.2 MG of water per month.
