The scheme replaced the biological treatment process with an activated sludge plant with a new sludge thickening system, storm tank auto washing facility and reinforced incoming power supply. The scheme included asset renewal to the existing works to increase the reliability of the plant. Following successful commissioning of the new plant the twelve existing biological filters and associated humus tanks were demolished and landscaped which eliminated the risk of fly nuisance to the local residents. The project enabled the works to meet the ammonia consent and to maintain the plant as a licensed waste treatment site.
Emphasis was placed on the environment including Crested Newt trapping, construction of an artificial sand martin bank, wildlife area enhancement and badger sett relocation for which the team were recognized with three Corporate Responsibility awards.
