Brussels – The European Commission has awarded a consortium led by MWH the contract for the evaluation of proposals submitted under the LIFE programme, the main instrument of the European Union for environmental, climate and nature conservation projects covering all 28 Member States. The consortium will provide technical assistance and support to the EC for the selection of LIFE project applications. The aim is to ensure that the selection process is robust, fair, transparent and well documented, resulting in the implementation of high quality projects.

Since 1992, LIFE has co-financed over 4,000 environmental and nature conservation projects in all of the 28 Member States of the European Union, supporting the development and implementation of EU environmental and climate policy. The programme, which was recently renewed with a budget of €3.4 billion for the period between 2014 and 2020, will contribute to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Europe 2020 Strategy as well as the EU’s environment and climate strategies and plans. The European Commission annually receives over 1,000 proposals for projects with European added value in the field of nature and biodiversity, environment, resource efficiency as well as climate action.

Wim Drossaert, Europe-Africa President at MWH Global: “This project plays a critical role in the process of funding a large number of projects of the LIFE programme. The European Commission aims to be one of the main enablers in improving the environment and minimizing the negative impact of climate change. It means a great deal for us to support the EC in this process to protect the environment and decrease the impacts on climate change, as well as help provide significant socio-economic benefits for people in all of the Member States of the European Union.”
