London, UK, 2 December 2014 - Professor David Balmforth, executive technical director at MWH is the new President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in the UK.
In his presidential address ‘Civil Engineering: fit for the future’ David examined civil engineering in tomorrow’s world, reflecting on the vision and tenacity of the early Victorian civil engineers and looking ahead to the global mega-trends that will severely test our already-fragile society and the infrastructure that supports it. David outlined the key ways in which both ICE and civil engineers will need to do things differently in order to be ready and able to meet these challenges and in this way continue the tradition that our Victorian forebears began: that of civil engineers shaping the future.
Professor Balmforth has worked for MWH since 1999 providing expert advice to clients on all aspects of urban flood control, pollution management and climate change adaptation in the wastewater sector. David was a member of the Pitt Review Advisory panel and the UK Government’s Strategy Group on ‘Engineering, Infrastructure and Climate Change Adaptation’ and is an international advisor on flood risk management. He is also a visiting professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College, London.
