To support World Environment Day on 5 June 2015, MWH has organised a ‘Green Travel Day’ for its offices and construction sites throughout the UK. World Environment Day is the United Nations’ main way to encourage worldwide awareness and positive action for the environment. The theme this year is: “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”.
MWH is focusing on how it can reduce its resource use and increase its resource efficiency by holding a ‘Green Travel Day’ and asking employees to travel to work by either car sharing, using public transport, cycling or walking. A thank you breakfast treat will be available for those taking part. Green Travel Plans have been produced to give greener options for employees and visitors travelling to the MWH offices.
To contribute to reducing our carbon footprint and to minimise energy use we have a carbon reduction campaign – ‘CarbonSmart’ – which looks to reduce energy and water use, minimise waste and improve resource efficiency. In addition, and to demonstrate the importance of reducing our carbon footprint, MWH Treatment is now a signatory for the Green Construction Board Statement of Endorsement. We have agreed ‘that the infrastructure sector should pursue lower carbon solutions that also cost less’. To become a signatory we have made three pledges:
- We commit to nominating a main board member who will have express responsibility to drive the carbon reduction agenda.
- We commit to making carbon reduction a requirement on all our major projects and programmes by the end of 2016.
- We commit to holding a high-level event with the leaders of our supply chain to explore how we can collectively drive lower carbon solutions and stimulate innovation.
