This year marked the 10th successful implementation of a high school internship program that is a partnership between MWH Global and the City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works (Board). The program began in 2003 with a goal of encouraging students in the fields of science, math and engineering. This year, MWH hired seven students to work along side MWH staff and our clients. The overall program included 40 internships with the City of Los Angeles and other firms. The students were given hands-on work assignments and attended field trips and educational workshops.
A breakfast was held at the conclusion of the five week program on August 3, 2012 at Los Angeles City Hall. Mike Watson, west division director for G&I in the Americas region, addressed attendees at the breakfast and meeting of the Board. Lizzette Villegas, national program coordinator, was recognized for her leadership in the management of the program. MWH also received a commendation from the Board for being a founding sponsor and leader in the engineering community.
MWH interns were appreciative of the opportunity, including Monica Arevalo who wrote: “I was allowed the opportunity to not only gain work experience but also learn about engineering and how it relates to our world. I assure you this is one of the best experiences I have ever had and I will put everything to good use. Thank you for this opportunity.”
The program is a positive example of public-private partnership to benefit youth and advance our purpose of Building a Better World.
