In the Technological Innovation category, MWH received the top prize – the Gold Award – for its work with the Waterlink Joint Venture and SA Water on the $400 million North South Interconnection System Project (NSISP) to improve the reliability of its water supply through a series enhancements to the existing network.

To manage this complex network, they implemented a suite of decision support tools that underpin the optimal operation of the network and represent a world-first for a water utility. The suite includes four components that, together, enable real-time and predictive and operational analytics. This allows SA Water to not only see what is happening across its network and respond accordingly, but also to see what will happen in the future to take proactive and preventative actions.

A projected total annualised saving to SA Water as a result of the decision support tools is in excess of $700,000. Additionally, this estimate does not take into account a variety of potential benefits that may be realised over a longer period of time, such as capital deferral opportunities and long-term adjustments to asset management strategy.

MWH and the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads also received Commendation in the Collaboration category for their joint efforts to manage the delivery of more than $890 million of reconstruction works in the Fitzroy region of Central Queensland. The roads – crucial to the region’s access to vital goods and services – were destroyed in floods which devastated the region in 2010, 2011 and 2012. The mammoth project was not only finished just under budget, but early as well.

A third Commendation was received in the Diversity category. The Asia Pacific region has a diverse senior management team which has worked on various formal and informal diversity initiatives, including actively addressing gender pay gaps, supporting flexible work arrangements to meet people’s work-life demands, partnering with Jobs Support to employ staff with disabilities and supporting “keeping in touch” days for staff on parental leave.
