Employees from the MWH Global office in Christchurch, NZ competed in this year’s CANstruction competition at the Christchurch A&P show held recently earning a winning the Honourable Mention from the judges for their entry CANderella’s Carriage.
This year’s CANstruction challenge was themed “Once upon a time.” The MWH team comprised of Ryan D’Souza, Laura Laird, Isobel Oldfield, James Harvey and Jeremy O’Neill, designed, tested, and built CANderella’s Carriage and offered the following explanation for their choice:
In 1950 the release of Walt Disney’s Cinderella captured the hearts and minds of both children and adults alike. This year, MWH decided to reimagine this vision and build Cinderella’s Carriage out of cans, raising the ordinary to the extraordinary. The carriage is a symbol of the journey that takes Cinderella from her current life to her fairytale life to be. We hope that providing these cans of food to families in need we are helping them on their journey forward also. These cans while ordinary, can be extraordinary in many ways; whether they are stacked to make a magical can masterpiece or more simply combined to make a meal enough to feed a family in need at Christmas time. This is only a small part of what can be achieved when people combine their efforts and come together for a good cause like the Christchurch City Mission.
The MWH team’s structure was made up of approximately 4000 cans, generously supplied by Foodstuffs NZ Ltd, and it took the team approximately 4 hours to complete their build. Also along with the other eight structures helped to raise well over 20,000 cans for the Christchurch City Mission.
