Over 200 people attended the conferences organized by the MWH Global operation in Italy to celebrate the Panama Canal centennial and illustrate the unique features of the expansion project. Mike Newbery, Vice President with MWH and Executive Director of the MWH-led design joint venture, represented MWH as an international keynote speaker and contributed to the success of both events thanks to an engaging presentation about the complexities of the expansion project design and the application of BIM.

The first meeting took place on 3 February 2015, was supported by the Milan Association of Engineers and brought together over 160 engineers, architects, geologists and managers who provided an excellent feedback about the event.

Stefano Susani, Europe-Africa E&I Regional Director, moderated the conference. The other keynote speakers were Antonio Zaffaroni, Executive Director of Salini-Impregilo, who presented on the history of the project, prof. Angelo Ciribini of University of Brescia, expert of BIM/visual project management, and prof. Oliviero Baccelli of Milan Bocconi University, expert of international economics and transportation.

On the 5th of February, another roundtable was hosted at the Milan Politecnico University in cooperation with the University Alumni Association and exclusively targeted to their members. About 40 university alumni attended the meeting to listen to the keynote speakers: Mike Newbery, Antonio Zaffaroni and Stefano Susani.

Prof. Enrico Zio, President of the Alumni Association, moderated the event.

Stefano Susani said: “It was a true honour to have Mike Newbery as our special guest in Italy. The significant interest and participation we obtained at both events confirms the enormous importance of this project across the world and our sound reputation within the Italian technical community.”

Mike Newbery said: “It is always a pleasure to represent the design team and tell our story about the design of the Third Set of Locks project. There are so many fascinating aspects to describe from the sustainable use of water saving basins, the unique lock gates, the 100-year design life requirement for the concrete structures to the many world class design standards we had to meet. My challenge is trying to decide what key aspect to talk about, this time I described our award-winning use of BIM.”
