SONY DSCDubai-based Cameron McWilliam turned his passion for running into an opportunity to provide access to clean water around the globe.

Struck by the World Health Organization and UNICEF data that one in eight of the world’s population does not have access to clean, safe water and that 1.4 million children die every year from lack of clean water and sanitation, Cameron McWilliam initiated a “Running for Clean Water” fundraising campaign.

Over the course of nine months, McWilliam logged 180 kilometers through his participation in four half marathons, eight 10Ks and one 16K race in locales ranging from San Francisco, CA to picturesque Dubai Marina in the United Arab Emeritus. But he didn’t just log kilometers … McWilliam also collected donations from friends and family to benefit WaterAid.

WaterAid is dedicated to providing the world’s poorest communities access to clean water and sanitation. According to Cameron, his decision to support the charity was simple because of the alignment between the purpose of MWH, Building a Better World, and WaterAid’s mission.

WaterAid states that $25 (USD) provides one person access to a lasting supply of safe water, improved hygiene and sanitation. After the nine month campaign Cameron raised $1,226 – enough to support nearly 50 people in need.

“Every day, the majority of us take things like a hot shower or a glass of clean water for granted,” said Cameron. “If we can educate those around us and make a small donation, no matter how small, it can make a [big] difference to those less fortunate than ourselves.”
