The American Academy of Environmental Engineers (AAEE) recently approved four MWH experts as Board Certified Environmental Scientists (BCES) in the Inaugural Class of April 2012. The four approved experts are:
- Simon Bluestone, MWH business unit leader
- Dr. Andy Eaton, MWH Laboratories technical director
- Joan Oppenheimer, MWH principal environmental scientist
- Ed Wilson, MWH Laboratories director
AAEE is a prestigious group of highly qualified professional engineers and scientists who have imposed self-testing and review for entry qualification. AAEE recently expanded the organization to encompass environmental scientists in a number of specialty fields. Each Board Certified Environmental Engineer (BCEE) or BCES have not only the standard pre-requisites for specialty certification, but have also passed written and oral examinations and/or reviews by an admission panel of AAEE. AAEE’s certification program is accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards.
AAEE is an active participant in the accreditation of environmental engineering and science curricula. Through this process, AAEE ensures that educational standards are responsive to the needs of the profession and that tomorrow’s engineers and scientists will meet the needs of the profession. AAEE further organizes multi-disciplinary teams of BCEEs, BCESs and Board Certified Environmental Engineering Members (BCEEM) to participate in concept study groups. These groups seek solutions to major environmental problems. Once developed, AAEE provides these solutions to key policy makers in industry and government.
As part of the qualification process, each person interested in seeking certification must possess certain pre-requisites. To achieve certification without written examination, eligible individuals must possess at least sixteen years of environment science experience, twelve of which are in responsible charge, after receipt of the baccalaureate degree. The majority of the individual’s experience must be in the specialty for which certification is sought. All of the MWH experts received certification by eminence without an additional written examination.
The BCES certification is available in eight fields, including air resources, environmental biology, environmental chemistry, environmental microbiology, environmental toxicology, groundwater and subsurface environment, surface water resources and sustainability science. To achieve certification by written examination and peer review, eligible individuals must possess at least eight years of acceptable environment science experience, four of which are in responsible charge.
AAEE was founded in 1955 for the principal purpose of serving the public by improving the practice, elevating the standards and advancing public recognition of environmental engineering through a program of specialty certification for qualified engineers.
