Thanks to the tremendous efforts of its Brussels-based team of international development experts, MWH has been awarded a €3.2 million contract to provide over the next two years strategic and technical advisory services for a project which will promote Sustainable Development in the Indian Ocean. Entitled “The ‘Implementation of Small Island Development States Mauritius Strategy in the Eastern and Southern Africa – Indian Ocean Region – ISIDSMS”, the project is for the Indian Ocean Commission and is funded by the European Commission.

The ISIDSMS Programme is a €10 million programme to be implemented by the Indian Ocean Commission, supported by MWH. The programme aims to raise social, economic and environmental standards in the Indian Ocean Region through the sustainable development of Small Island Development States (SIDS). Whilst the focus countries are France/Reunion, Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Zanzibar of Tanzania, the programme addresses issues faced by SIDS worldwide and will support SIDS exchange throughout the world, particularly in the Caribbean and Pacific regions.

Project activities will focus on the following consulting services: development of tools and mechanisms for achieving Sustainable Development objectives linked to development and implementation of adaptation and resilience building measures due to Climate Change, Disaster Risks Reduction, Environment Conservation, etc. The MWH-led consortium, which includes the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and ETC Foundation (the Netherlands), will undertake various activities in these sectors, including technical review and analysis, capacity-building activities and the development of political strategies.
