In Sub-Saharan Africa, hydropower is regularly ranked the most economically viable large scale source of energy. In most countries in the region, it is one of the top sources of power alongside coal, gas and diesel fired power stations. Africa as a whole has significant potential to increase hydro capacity. Studies suggest a potential hydroelectric pool of 1750 TWh/year, of which 5% is currently utilised. Over the next 20 – 30 years, based on planned hydropower developments, this figure could quadruple.
