Brussels, Belgium – MWH Global, as member of a consortium led by GOPA Consulting, was awarded the contract for the implementation of the second phase of the Joint Africa–EU Strategy Support Mechanism (JAES SM II).

The Joint Africa-EU Strategy was adopted at the Lisbon Summit in 2007, with the aim of shaping a new Strategic Africa - EU partnership to foster exchanges, cooperation and closer political and economic ties between the two continents, on the basis of common priorities and visions for the future. Both the European Union and Africa recognize the utmost importance of the strategy in order to better address raising global issues, such as climate change, and to pursue long-term peace and security. The strategy also aims at strengthening the democratic institutions, with a major involvement of civil society, media and the private sector in continental cooperation, as well as at supporting actively Africa’s continental integration.

The consortium will facilitate the implementation of the JAES by providing technical, strategic, logistic and administrative support in 5 main priority areas, which were defined in the JAES Roadmap 2014-2017:

  • Peace and security;
  • Democracy, good governance and human rights;
  • Human development;
  • Sustainable and inclusive development and growth and continental integration;
  • Global and emerging issues.

Among other tasks, MWH and the consortium members will provide logistical support for the organization of side events to JAES key meetings, as well as technical expertise for the monitoring and assessment of the JAES Roadmap 2014-2017 implementation, and managing the broader stakeholder communication and awareness raising campaigns to the programme.

Christophe Leroy, Operations Director of MWH in Belgium: “MWH has over 20 years of experience in successfully managing projects for the EU and other donors in Europe and Africa. We look forward to using our knowledge, expertise and network for the success of the JAES, which will impact and improve the lives of both African and European citizens, by helping build a common space of peace, security, democracy, prosperity, solidarity and human dignity.”
