Sacramento, California — The Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) selected the Carmichael Water District for its “2004 Clair A. Hill Water Agency Award for Excellence” in recognition of its Surface Water Supply Project and innovative Bajamont Way Membrane Filtration Plant. This annual award is designed to foster excellence among California water agencies and recognizes innovation in managing and protecting the State’s most precious resource.
The ACWA identified the District’s Surface Water Supply project along with five other projects that covered a broad range of water industry related issues from around the State. The award was presented to the Carmichael in honor of its commitment, leadership, innovation, ability to replicate and quantifiable evidence of success.
MWH has been assisting with the District since the early 1990s on all aspects of the project, including planning, pilot testing, designing, construction management, and commissioning of a state-of-the-art 17 million gallons per day (expandable to 22 mgd) membrane (microfiltration) drinking water treatment plant. One unique feature of the project was the housing of membrane units in a building that was architecturally enhanced to blend into the residential neighborhood and fit on the 1.6 acres available for construction.
Through the use of a very public process and innovative, leading-edge technology, a creative solution allowed the District to provide a very high quality drinking water in a manner, which the community embraced. The District’s Membrane Filtration Plant has been on-line since late 2001 and regularly receives visitors from across the country and around the world.
The “2004 Clair A. Hill Water Agency Award for Excellence” award was presented to Steve Nugent, General Manager of the Carmichael Water District at the ACWA conference general luncheon on May 5, 2004. The luncheon was attended by more than 500 California water agency representatives and board members. ACWA is the largest coalition of public water agencies in the country with nearly 450 public agency members. Its members are collectively responsible for 90% of the water delivered to cities, farms and business in California.
