Cape Coral, Florida – The City of Cape Coral’s $44 million Southwest Area 3 Utility Expansion Project has been selected for Southeast Construction’s Award of Excellence in the Best of 2004 Awards program. Designed and constructed by MWH, this project is a key part of the City’s Phase 1 five-year, $200million Utility Expansion Program.

The Southwest Area 3 project included design of water, wastewater and irrigation pressure mains, as well as gravity sewer systems and community sewer pumping stations. In completing the Southwest Area 3 project, the team produced over 750 drawings during the 10-month design phase. The overall expansion included approximately 280,000 feet of sewer gravity pipe, 100,000 feet of sewer force main, 150,000 feet of water transmission and distribution pipeline, 140,000 feet of irrigation water mains and 7 sewer pumping stations, providing over 4,500 water, sewer and reclaimed water services to customers.

A critical element of the overall project was a comprehensive customer service program that included neighborhood meetings, 24 hour/7 day a week hotline and a utility expansion website to track progress. The project team also carefully managed environmental concerns, protecting endangered species such as the Southern Bald Eagle. The Southwest Area 3 project was completed in June 2004, with a zero defect safety culture.

Since completing this Southwest Area 3 project, the City of Cape Coral selected MWH to lead its 7-year, approximately $500 million Program Management at Risk Services for Water, Wastewater and Irrigation Facilities Program, which includesPhase 2 of the Utility Expansion Program.
