Glenview, Illinois – The Consulting Engineers Council of Illinois honored the Glen Redevelopment Project with a ‘Special Achievement Award’ in its 2004 Engineering Excellence Awards competition. As an outstanding example of a large-scale, community-based economic redevelopment, this project effectively delivered a well-balanced solution that considered community concerns, economic resource development and environmental protection.
Overall the project involved the conversion of more than 1,100 acres of the former Glenview Naval Air Station into a diverse residential, commercial, recreational and open space area called the Village of Glenview. Since 1997, MWH has served as the Village of Glenview’s engineering services provider, delivering a wide range of services from strategic planning and permitting to conceptual design and construction supervision.
The centerpiece of the Glen Redevelopment Project is 140-acre Gallery Park. This area includes a 40-acre lake, as well as athletic playing fields, a sledding hill, hiking and bike trails, a children’s garden, a new community center and middle school. In addition, over 40% of the area was developed as public open space or conservation space. Protected natural areas include 18 acres of wetlands and a 40-acre prairie preserve. In addition, the commercial and light industrial businesses are projected to produce up to 5,600 permanent and 12,800 short-term jobs.
