Cardiff, UK – MWH, in conjunction with Hanson, one of the UK’s leading pre-cast concrete manufacturers, have developed an off-the shelf, pre-cast concrete combined sewer overflow (CSO) chamber, called ‘CSO in a box,’ to ease and speed the installation of CSO networks in the UK.

These pre-cast concrete boxes, developed to meet water companies’ needs to increase efficiency through standardization, are available in two sizes. The pre-fabricated chambers, fully compliant with the Wastewater Planning Users Group (WaPUG) standards, provides a quick and flexible CSO solution while utilizing a familiar and assured design. Installing a traditional CSO can take between 10-15 days. The MWH/Hanson-developed CSO boxes can be installed in one day. It is anticipated that these standardized boxes are ideal for over 400 of the current CSO applications planned in the UK.

MWH ‘CSO in a box’ technical lead, Robert McTaggart, commented: “Saving time equals reduced disruption to the public caused by installation work and saves on construction costs. With increased emphasis on Water Companies’ efficiencies from the Office of Water Services (OFWAT), community relations and regulatory targets, it is anticipated that standardized solutions will play a significant part in the delivery of the AMP4 program”.

Since the formation of the water companies in the UK, MWH has worked closely with the privatized utilities on the design and operation of sewer networks. The UK water utilities have established major programs over the past five years to screen discharges into receiving waters from CSOs during storm events.
