Broomfield, Colorado – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has presented the BLM Director’s 4C’s Award to Jay Pennington, MWH Project Manager, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, for the remediation of abandoned mine lands in Nevada. The 4C’s award, which stands for Communication, Consultation and Cooperation, All in the Service of Conservation, is given annually to industry professionals around the country that exemplify these four main principles as designated by the Department of Interior Secretary, Gale Norton.

For more than a decade, MWH has worked jointly with the state of Nevada, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as part of the Restoration of Abandoned Mine Sites program. The primary goal is to address water quality problems caused by drainage and related activities from abandoned and inactive non-coal mines.

As construction manager on the project, MWH is managing site characterization, closure planning, construction fieldwork, and as-built reporting as part of a comprehensive design/build service. Specific work recognized in 2004 included the final reclamation and closure of two abandoned heap-leach gold mines in east central Nevada. Technical input was provided by a multi-disciplinary team of Federal and State agencies, including U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, BLM-Ely Field Office, Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, Nevada Department of Wildlife, and the Nevada Division of Minerals, as well as academic support from University of Nevada, Reno, and the Desert Research Institute.

The award was presented to Mr. Pennington and Ms. Kim Mulhern of USACE, Lynn Bjorklund of BLM-Ely Field Office and others by Kathleen Clarke, BLM Director on February 23, 2005.
