MWH today announced that it has received the J.W. Morris Sustaining Member Award from the Society of American Military Engineers (SAME). The award was presented at the 2006 Joint Engineer Education and Training Conference and Expo in New Orleans, La.
The J.W. Morris Sustaining Member Award is named in honor of Retired Army Lt. Gen. John W. Morris and has been presented annually since 1981. The award recognizes a sustaining member firm of SAME that has at least two or more Post or chapter sustaining memberships in each of the previous five years, and which has rendered the most eminent and notable contribution to SAME.
“MWH received this award because of its long-standing membership with SAME, along with its many contributions used to support the Society’s education programs and advance its mission of providing engineering support for national security,” said Dr. Robert Wolff, SAME Executive Director.
“MWH is honored to receive this prestigious award and is pleased to have had the opportunity to be a part of such an important engineering organization,” said Gary Erickson, president of MWH’s Federal Services unit. “We look forward to continuing our support of SAME to further the objectives of the Society throughout the engineering and construction industry.”
During 2005, Erickson served as a member of the SAME Senior Executive Group and as Academy of Fellows Vice Chair for Mentoring, in which capacity he designed a new Academy of Fellows Mentoring Award, first presented in 2005. In addition, MWH contributed to the planning and execution of the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley Joint Regional Education and Training Conference, and the Northwest and Pacific Joint Education and Training Conference.
MWH also dedicated resources to the SAME K-12 program, College Outreach and other community service programs. Going beyond financial aid to these programs, MWH became involved members in the communities where they work, live and play. In addition, MWH was a sponsor of the 2005 Joint Engineer Education and Training Conference Young Members and Fellows Reception, the 2005 Golden Eagle Awards Dinner, and the SAME Fellows Investiture Icebreaker and Reception. SAME involves more than 123 Posts - or chapters - in 15 countries. These Posts are divided into 16 regions, and each region has leaders assigned to assist them. These Posts are important since they are at the heart of SAME, and provide a space where members can meet to network and exchange ideas.
MWH has been a SAME sustaining member for more than 20 years and currently maintains sustaining member status in 33 SAME Posts. As an active SAME sustaining member, MWH recruits and appoints individuals within and across the company as sustaining member representatives for all 33 Post affiliations. The representatives are selected based on an expected level of involvement with the local Post such that the representative benefits SAME, the Post and MWH.
Founded in 1920, the mission of the Society of American Military Engineers is to promote and facilitate engineering support for national security by developing and enhancing relationships and competencies among uniformed services, public and private sector engineers and related professionals.
