Regional integration is essential to Africa’s growth. Of all the key infrastructure sectors – transport, energy, water and information communications technologies – power is taking the lead in connecting the continent. Many experts believe that large power generation and transmission programs will act as a catalyst for better planning and roll out of regional infrastructure programs.
While electricity trading levels in Africa may be extremely low at this point, the continent is seeing increasing co-operation between the various power pools. These include the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), West African Power Pool (WAPP), East African Power Pool (EAPP) and the Central African Pool (CAPP).
