Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive Shared Path

Providing a vital link for the eastern suburbs of Auckland with the city centre.

Introduction

For a community on the move, travelling between Glen Innes and Tamaki Drive just got easier by 1.4 km thanks to the opening of Section 1 of a new shared path. Locals and visitors alike can walk, run, cycle, scoot, ride or wheel their way across two bridges and a ramp reinforced by earth, unlocking spectacular scenery as they go. The four metre wide path, which includes hundreds of metres of retaining walls, is situated in Auckland’s picturesque eastern suburbs. Once delivered the path will complete a missing link in Auckland’s cycle network and connect with cycle routes to Point England and the shared path along Tamaki Drive.

Project scope

Our team of experts played a major role in the successful development of this community asset, from early planning and regulatory reporting right through to detailed design, engineering and construction management. Stakeholder management was also a key area of focus with numerous workshops and engagement techniques undertaken to allow the project to advance swiftly. We were also required to fast-track the detailed design to meet tight client timeframes.

Project challenges

We faced complex engineering problems, consenting issues and a site that covered several environmentally sensitive areas. In addition the fully separated shared path required us to design a solution that manages user conflict, difficult gradients, perceived safety issues and that connects communities to public transport along the route. Our ability to meet these challenges head on and deliver Section 1 within the tight timeframe is reflected in the high levels of client and stakeholder satisfaction to date.

Delivery plan

The 7.3 km route is divided into the following four sections, recognising the different consenting and construction challenges of each:

Section 1 - Merton Road to St Johns Road (completed)

Section 2 - St Johns Road to Orakei Basin (mid-2017-mid 2018)

Section 3 - Orakei Basin boardwalk: (early 2017 to late 2017)

Section 4 - Orakei Basin to Tamaki Drive (late 2017 to late 2018)
