For the fifth consecutive year, MWH participated in Renewable Energy World – part of Power Gen Europe 2013, one of the most prestigious international exhibitions and conferences in the energy and power generation fields.
Chiara Di Silvestro, MWH project engineer based in Milan, wrote and presented the paper: “Towards the highest efficiency and the lowest environmental impact: a case study showing the recent developments of low head hydropower plants”, which was nominated among the three finalists of the Best Paper Award and has received the highly commended recognition within the “hydropower sector opportunities” category.
The paper shows the opportunities of mini-hydropower plants, i.e. below 10 MW: this technology has several environmental advantages and can serve remote communities that have difficulties reaching power distribution networks.
The winning paper focuses on a project that the Italian team has been carrying out in Bulgaria since 2009. The project involves nine mini-hydro plants on the Iskar river, the longest river in the country.
MWH has supported PVB Group, the client, throughout all the phases of the project from the feasibility study financing, and throughout the operation phase of the plants. In addition, we have assisted the client in completing the registration and monitoring process according to the Joint Implementation Mechanism within the Kyoto Protocol.
