In the Spring media headlines in the U.K. screamed , ‘UK in drought crisis’, ‘March hottest, driest month for 30 years’, ‘Hosepipe bans in South’ and then in April continuing until present (July) the U.K. has experienced the wettest consecutive period for 100 years. Drought slipped off the front pages.
Evan Dollar, head of water resources at MWH, argues in the latest issue of Institute of Water that although this drought emergency has passed, the long term underlying problems have not gone away. Drought is and will continue to be a recurring problem for the U.K. He says this change in weather gives us the luxury of time to plan properly to provide stable water resources for future crises rather than making short-term and possibly panic induced unsustainable decisions.
