Much attention is being given today to the removal of nutrients from wastewaters because of the negative environmental consequences that can result if these are released in excess. Art UmbleWithout a doubt, nutrient reduction is an essential component of our national policy on environmental protection. But how much attention are we giving to the removal of organic carbon from wastewaters, since its presence in domestic wastewater can be an indicator of the potential for waterborne pathogens? As population expands, the load of organic carbon released to the environment also expands. The degree to which this loading is controlled is reflected in the quality of public health and the environment.
