As the population in Florida has grown over the past several decades, so has the demand for fresh water – in 1990 Florida’s population was around 13 million and has since increased to 20 million, with a current fresh water demand of 6.4 BGD for drinking water, irrigation, agricultural needs, and industrial uses.
In the next 20 years, Florida’s population is expected to grow from the current 20 million residents to more than 25 million, while the fresh water demand for all uses is expected to increase by over 20 percent to approximately 7.9 BGD.
