Kati Bell and Varsha Wylie discuss chlorination and the introduction of peroxyacetic acid.
Global Practice Leader Kati Bell and Project Technical Lead Varsha Wylie recently co-authored an article revolving around the tightening of regulations on disinfection byproduct (DBP) created through chlorination. Though this has been the longtime practice within the industry, new environmental considerations have led to the necessity of alternative methods.
As such, attentions have been turned to peroxyacetic acid or peracetic acid (PAA) as a new disinfection technology “to provide bacterial inactivation performance at costs competitive with other mature disinfection technologies.” Though this chemical oxidant has been applied to the food, beverage, medical, and pharmaceutical industries as a disinfectant for many years, it will be a new application for wastewater treatment.
